Nutrition Counseling

Nutrition counseling must be ordered by your primary care physician (PCP). This counseling is performed by a registered dietitian (RD) and provides nutritional information to help with weight loss and prevention. Individual and/or group sessions may be offered. Counseling is covered for 2 visits for members with the following conditions:

  • Obesity (BMI greater than or equal to 30)
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart failure
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic kidney/renal disease

Additional counseling visits may be approved at the request of your PCP and with the appropriate clinical information to support the request.

Medical Weight Loss Clinic

Medical Weight Loss Clinic (MWLC) may be a covered benefit if you meet specific criteria. Your PCP must refer you for weight management and has the information to check that you meet the criteria.

Members approved for MWLC attend the clinic that is closest to their home. All supplements and nutrients may also be covered for approved members. This program is expected to be completed within a maximum of 6 months.

Exercise/Activity

Please do not start any exercise plan without checking with your PCP first. Not sure if exercise is for you? Here some excuses and reasons to get moving.

Weight loss medications

There are weight loss medications that may be available to you as a member when they are prescribed by your PCP. All weight loss medications will need a prior authorization form to be submitted by your PCP to support that the weight loss efforts are being supervised and monitored by your PCP. Check with your PCP to see if you qualify for these medications.

Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery may be a covered benefit if you meet specific criteria. This benefit is limited to one bariatric procedure per lifetime and is limited to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (laparoscopic or open). Members who have had a bariatric surgery prior to joining MHP are not eligible for a second surgery through MHP.
